The Janis Joplin Music Icons stamp (previously reported about by Now I’ve Heard Everything) will be arriving at your local post office on August 8th. The first day of issue ceremony will take place that day at 1:30pm at the Panhandle Stage of the Outside Lands festival at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. If you are going to be in San Francisco that day and wish to attend that ceremony, you must respond by July 28th. According to articles in The Washington Post and Linn’s Stamp News, there may be more Music Icon stamps to come. Musicians reportedly under consideration for inclusion in the series are Jim Morrison, Elvis Presley (it would be his second appearance on a United States stamp), James Brown, Roy Orbison, John Lennon, Bill Monroe, Sam Cooke, Tammy Wynette, Fats Waller, Freddie Fender, Sarah Vaughan and Willie Dixon. Stamps previously issued in the series honored Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles and Lydia Mendoza.
